Wild Flag’s most immediate origins are from the soundtrack to this movie, literally. While all four present members of Wild Flag are included in the music, they weren’t Wild Flag yet. It was a way to help out Carrie B. who was asked to score the movie, and she called upon Janet Weiss and Rebecca Cole to assist her with the music. Later they called upon old friend Mary T. to add vocals. Not surprisingly, the ladies thought this musical collaboration was worth exploring, and thankfully for us music listeners. They set out for the first tour in November of 2010, playing shows on the West Coast. The band played more than a handful of original songs, as well as a bunch of covers to fill in their new set.
2011 saw lots of touring for the band—a whopping eight show streak at SXSW, several North America tours, as well as rounding out the year by playing All Tomorrow’s Parties in England. Their self-titled record was also released in 2011, to much critical success.
2012 has seen the band travel Europe, release a split seven inch with Mission of Burma, and play some live shows in the US, albeit mostly larger festival shows. Wild Flag’s new set of music at these shows does contain four new songs not found on the album, two Mary-sung songs, and two Carrie-sung songs. Hopefully 2013 will see the release of these songs and more.
